Pick up another half and melt the edge on the warm plate then push the two sides together to seal. Add 1 tablespoon hot cocoa powder and mini marshmallows (and any other add-ins you want) to half of the spheres. Pick up the empty half of the chocolate bomb and place it on the warm plate for a couple of seconds, just until it melts. Microwave a microwave safe plate for a minute, you want the plate to be just hot enough to melt the chocolate. Gently push the half spheres out of the silicone mold. Pop the molds into the freezer for 5-10 minutes to set. Scoop some chocolate into the mold and use the back of a spoon or pastry brush to push the melted chocolate around the molds, making it thick enough along the sides and edges. Use the microwave to melt the chocolate melts or chocolate stirring in between until everything is smooth and pourable. When you pour hot milk into the mug, the chocolate melts and magically releases the marshmallows and cocoa hiding inside. Hot chocolate bombs or hot cocoa bombs are cute lil balls of chocolate that you put into a mug. You can too! What is a hot chocolate bomb? It’s super cute and fun and you can make SO many flavor variations! They sell hot chocolate bombs/hot chocolate balls at the store, but around here I haven’t seen any so I decided to make my own. It’s almost Christmas and around here, that means it’s hot chocolate bombs season!

They will also help you to avoid that your team gets bored by doing the same activities over and over again. These activities will help you to keep your Retrospective meeting diversified. In addition the book also contains a list of possible activities for each phase. They walk you through a virtual Retrospective meeting with a virtual team and give you a lot useful insights with many example situations you might face. It contains a tremendous amount of useful experience provided by the experts Esther and Diana. As menioned at the beginning of the post, I highly recommend the book Agile Retrospectives – Making Good Teams Great. And the suggestions in each section should help you to avoid some common pitfalls.īut there is a lot more to learn, when you want to become better in leading a Retrospective meeting. The tips I have been describing for each phase should help you to become a better Scrum Master. Keeping these phases in your mind while planning your next Retrospective will give you an organized way of approaching and structuring the session. Ok, now I have walked you through the five phases of a Scrum Retrospective. Therefore your final step is to thank everyone again for their time and their effort and close the meeting. Step 3: Thank Everyone and Let Them GoĪt this point you can end the Retrospective and let the team go back to their work place and continue with their tasks. ![]() At the end of this step the participants are mostly in a good mood and that´s exaclty how you want the people to leave the room. In my experience this bonds the team closer together and adds to the team pride. By letting everyone explain their feelings about the meeting you make the results even more important for the team. With these activities you generally put the team in a spot to celebrate the results of the retrospective. Then everyone, one after another, puts the stickies on the board explaining what they mean. This wayĪnother option is to ask everyone to write down on a sticky note the one thing they like and one thing they would change about the Retrospective. Then you give the word to each participant in the group. There are again a couple of different formats of how you can do this.įor instance, you can ask everyone to name one thing what they learned in this Retrospective. Here you would like to have an input from all participants what they liked about the Retrospective and what could be improved. Step 2: Perform a Retrospective of the Retrospective Session And I use this recap as the introduction for the next step. I keep this very short, like two or three sentences. You want to recap the whole meeting in just a few sentences and remind everyone what problem we have tackled, how we are going to solve it and what we achieved in this meeting. Perform a Retrospective of the Retrospective session. The goal of this last phase is to sum up the results of our Retrospective and generally leave a good feeling behind for the participants of the meeting.Įveryone should leave the room with the feeling that we achieved something useful and that the meeting was worth it. Now, let’s finish off our Retrospective with the last phase. Based on that we have created action items to improve our process. In the previous four phases we have decided what we are going to do about the problems we identified earlier. ![]() I use this five-step-approach as a guideline in each Retrospective meeting, which I lead as a Scrum Master. These five stages are presented in the book Agile Retrospectives – Making Good Teams Great by Esther Derby and Diana Larsen. If you haven´t read the previous posts in this series you can start with Phase 1 -Setting the stage. In this post I cover Phase 5- Close the Retrospective. We’re bending our own rules slightly here, as these two tools are actually user-created Packs for Ableton Live rather than fully-fledged plugins. It all adds up to a fun and interesting drum plugin that offers a fresh angle on a classic set of sounds. There’s also a flexible LFO section that can be used to add plenty of movement to your patterns.Įach sound also gets its own multi-pitch sum mixer, which allows users to be far more creative with the somewhat simple 606 sounds than is possible using the original hardware. These include additional Tape, Vinyl and Sub texture layers that can be dialed in to add extra character to the sounds. SampleScience’s take has a few tricks up its sleeve that helps it stand out from the crowd, though. SampleScience 6o6 KonceptĪs you might be able to guess from the name, 6o6 Koncept is a sample-driven plugin based on the sounds of Roland’s classic TR-606 drum machine.Ħ06 sounds are hardly uncommon these days - Roland, Behringer and others offer hardware emulations, and you can find sampled 606 kits included in many big name DAWs and paid-for beat plugins. If you’re a guitarist or composer looking for a passable replacement to a real drummer to fill out your next demo, this could be ideal. It’s probably rock and alternative styles that are best served by Power Drumkit 2. Even if you don’t use the onboard sounds, this can be a handy tool for driving other drum samplers. Users can mix-and-match grooves and fills within the plugin to build their ideal beat, before dragging the MIDI composition onto their DAW’s timeline. There are MIDI presets replicating a range of playing styles, each with its own sub-library of fills. The real highlight here is the extensive and flexible library of MIDI grooves. ![]() There’s a per-channel mixer with compressor included, to help adjust levels further. In terms of sounds, you’re limited to just a sampled acoustic kit here, although the sounds themselves have been well recorded and pre-processed in order to cut through a mix. ![]() Unlike some of the more electronic or synthetic tools in this list, Power Drumkit 2 is a plugin aimed squarely at replicating the realistic sound of a real musician behind a genuine drum kit. Both plugins can track incoming MIDI notes, too, meaning they can be put to use for percussive basslines and melodies as well as traditional drums. RD-909, meanwhile, has individual controls to shape the tone, pitch sweep and noise of the drum, plus an added distortion effect. The BD-808 adds course and fine tuning, plus an extended Long Decay mode. In reality, the hardware that inspires these plugins is fairly limited - you can’t even tune a real 808 kick - but Synsonic has ramped up the flexibility significantly with a variety of parameters absent from the originals. ![]() While a one-track drum plugin might not sound all that useful on paper, it’s worth bearing in mind that between them those two bass drums underpin entire genres, from house and techno to hip-hop, so having access to speciality tools dedicated to shaping the perfect emulation is nothing to scoff at. ![]() Specifically, the synthesised kicks found on Roland’s iconic TR-909 and TR-808 drum machines. This pair of free percussion synths from German developer Synsonic focus entirely on just one drum sound: the kick. Native Instruments Urban Beats (opens in new tab) A factor worth bearing in mind if you’re on or considering a new system. One important thing to note: MiniSpillage is Mac only and, like several tools in this roundup, doesn’t seem to work with Apple’s new M1 hardware. Filters and an onboard distortion let users sculpt the tone of each drum further, too. The kick can do punchy hits and deeper bass sounds, hats can be noisy and complex, and the wood drum can create a nice variety of perc sounds.Įach generator is equipped with an LFO and envelopes to help add shape and movement. The plugin is a trimmed-down version of the paid-for DrumSpillage, making use of the same impressive sound engine but paring things back to just three generators - kick, hat and wood drum.ĭespite the limited sound engine, there’s more sonic scope than you might think from these three tools. MiniSpillage has been around a few years now, but remains one of the handiest freeware drum synthesizers going. ![]() For the game to be downloadable, we had to keep the footprint small, minimize initial and ongoing bandwidth, and basically compress everything as much as possible. Technology Our primary technology goals were for the game to be completely downloadable, to have safe communication between players, and to have a unique look and feel. Our goals haven't really changed much since launch. We realized prior to launch that we would need a well-designed tutorial and that our game would have to be completely downloadable, even over narrowband. We targeted mini-games, cooperative turn-based combat with easy grouping, and open-ended socializing as our main types of gameplay. ![]() This meant that the game had to be safer, friendlier, and easier to learn than other MMOs. High-Level Goals Our primary goal was to build a fun game for kids of all ages. The team size has stayed relatively constant, although the mix has shifted more towards operations people as we have scaled back on building new technology in favor of adding more game features. The only significant out-sourcing was for sound and music production, which was done by SoundDelux. The Team The core team was 12 or 13 people for most of the development cycle. We pitched Toontown Online as the first attraction of Disney's "online theme park" and started pre-production in 2000. Also, the emergence of massively multiplayer online gaming seemed like an opportunity for Disney, because Disney really knows how to build compelling virtual worlds, and everyone else in this space was focusing on an older demographic. It occurred to us that some of the things we were doing for the theme parks would soon be possible on inexpensive 3D graphics hardware in people's homes. The project was started in 1999 while we were working on high-end virtual reality attractions for the Disney theme parks. Players get to create their own Toons and join together with other Toons to defend Toontown from the Cogs, a mob of unscrupulous business robots who are trying to take over. Those bursts are a proven way to improve both overall cardiovascular health and athletic performance. You’ve heard of it, and even possibly done a lot of it in group fitness classes like Barry’s-and there’s nothing to stop you from knocking out a HIIT workout at home.Īs the name suggests, HIIT training involves intense, max-effort movements followed by short rest periods. Enter high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Luckily for you, one of the best workouts to do from home is also the quickest. By now, you’ve probably scrolled through at least a half dozen fitness apps and perused three or four different websites to see if kettlebells are back in stock. ![]() But workouts are not one of them-we’re ready to say homebound fitness is starting to feel like something to simply get through to maintain any sliver of physical shape or mental health. "That's not to say that everyone will experience these things as bio-individuality needs to be considered, but it could be a matter of time for any given individual to experience the adverse effects of a high-intensity-only protocol. We’re weeks into coronavirus quarantine, and many of us are learning to take some pleasure in doing things slowly-baking bread, maybe, or indulging in spa-level grooming treatments. "We're looking at an increased risk of injury, excess cortisol production, burn-out, excess fatigue, and so on. "Many people are far more stressed than they even realize, so adding HIIT as their primary (or only!) exercise option to the mix has the potential to be a disaster," Montalvo said. □ post shared by Luke Worthington on at 12:14pm PDT at 12:14pm PDTĪnd when people start to chase the endorphin rush of having completed a HIIT class, they ultimately have to push themselves harder and harder, which can increase the injury risk. Just the same as only ever performing one particular exercise mode because we know it to be ‘good’ means we neglect others and often wind up hurt. A balanced exercise regime should address all five forms of measurable wellness: Muscular strength Work capacity (cardio fitness) Movement quality Body composition Emotional wellbeing The proportions of time spent on each of these depends of course upon an individual’s starting point, and particular goals, wants, and needs. But - every persons regime should be consistently addressing all five in some form or other. But if we start replacing our regular meals with chocolate bars then we probably all understand that’s not a smart move. Exercise choices are much the same. No one particular mode of exercise is inherently ‘bad’, so long as we’re covering the fundamentals elsewhere. We also know that a few sugary snacks here and there isn’t really going to do any harm, (so long as the rest of are diet has our nutritional bases covered). The combat as a whole feels good, but after 50 levels and 3 full, 10 slot hotbars, full of abilities, it starts to lose its luster. On my mage, cooldowns were high on my favorite abilities, and cast times were long on the ones that did the most damage, with little you can do with your stats to change that. Too often I found myself accessing the majority of my damage abilities in my repertoire to kill some of the lowliest enemies. I enjoy the flow of combat, by my main issue with it lies in the amount of abilities you have, and the amount of abilities you have to use at any given time. As a basis for comparison, I was also tasked similarly with reviewing Bless Online and despite Astellia’s combat being largely uninspired, the skills and flow of combat are by far superior in function to the disjointed combat in Bless. Some abilities allowed for a run and gun style of play, while others required the correct positioning, or a cast time, so simply face-rolling your keyboard wouldn’t do the trick in killing much of anything. Between my two characters, the Assassin and the Mage, each character had abilities that were impactful in combat. Fortunately, the combat actually works well. Barunson E&A made little attempt to break up the average combat formula from the traditional theme park experience. At its worst, on a main quest line, I was taken to a completely wrong quest destination, where I fiddled around for a half hour before I realized, auto-movement screwed up and I wasn’t even close to where I needed to be.īetween point A, obtaining the quest, and point B, completing the quest, lies the combat. On several occasions, it would take me part of the way, stop, and have to be reactivated. In Astellia, most of the time the auto-movement takes you where you need to be. One major issue with auto-movement is that in order for it to work as a fantastic feature, it needs to be reliable. ![]() On the other hand, every single quest turns into, auto-move to destination, kill the “Q” enemy, move to next destination, collect the “Q” material, and this continues on until you’ve hit max level. On the one hand, it’s helpful to have the game direct you to the exact area you need to be in, and label the exact enemies you need to kill. ![]() The majority of quest mobs are tagged with a large “Q” indicator overhead, so that players don’t need to rely on quest text, and since the enemies are largely rehashed, you could be killing a Rofen at level 20 or at level 40, it would make no difference in how they are defeated.Īuto-movement is one of those quality of life features that is both a blessing and a curse. For the most part, players don’t have to pay attention to where they are going and what they are killing. The monotony of questing in Astellia is exasperated by the facts that, many of the enemies stay the same despite progressing 50 levels, and quest movement is largely automated. Multiple quest hubs are strewn about large swaths of instanced maps, and many times your quest log will be loaded with general, mundane kill quests with story aspects that may or may not play into the main storyline. The largely forgettable storyline is fairly common place in many MMO’s that follow these classical theme park style questing motifs. The main story generally revolves around your ability to grow as a Star Caller, save your sister who was taken for nefarious purposes, unite nations, and other deeds that tend to shift as you progress. In the world of Astellia, the player character is n Astellian, or “Star Caller”, a person with the ability to call upon powerful Astels that will aid you on your quests and in battle. If you haven’t had the inclination to follow along with my journey through the world of Astellia in my first and second week, don’t feel too left out as the final verdict will be an all encompassing picture of my total experience. Games that also put players through an emotional trip or simply a wholesome, feel-good time have also been rising immensely in popularity, and I think a large part of this has to do with an increase of stress we see in our day-to-day lives that have also been amplified by the effects of COVID that still lingers even post-vaccination for a lot of folks. As I've gotten older I've had a greater synergy for games that don't ask much of me whether it involves my time, skill, or attention that would determine whether I ever see credits roll or not (I always try to beat everything I play), and it's the reason why point-and-click, walking sims, hidden objects, farming sims, and management games have been more my vibe as of late. |
